inspiration: breathing in a different light....

This afternoon I wanted to try something a little different with some photos I did of Evelyn this morning. There are so many crisp and clear photos out there, which is great and what most people like, especially for family portraits and such. But it's also fun to let loose, to just work with the sunlight coming through the window, to see the subject in a different light and let the photo breathe....

she's so soft & strong & beautiful... can you tell?

inspiration: {October Evenings}

she stood by the tree and said "mom take a picture of me."

October evenings in Minnesota that is--by the end of the week I'll be experiencing October evenings on the very southern tip of Florida, which will be quite different, I'm sure....

guest post! (this is exciting stuff, y'all)

Okay, so I'm still writing the post but the photos I'm sharing are done by Jason - my life partner and photography-partner-in-training. He, too, loves working with light and interesting perspectives. We're huge fans of sun spots! And as much as I love being behind the camera, it's so fun to get in front of it too.

We did these earlier this evening off the county road just a few miles from our house using my new 50mm 1.8 lens. The inspiration for this shoot was the sweater I'm wearing, which I found at the thrift store last week for a couple bucks:

{by the light of the stars, the sun, the moon....}

So many exciting things are going on - for one, today I get to be the second photographer at a wedding in downtown Minneapolis. My friend Sarah (check out her website), has asked me to accompany her and to be in the balcony during the ceremony, as well as to get the detail shots at the reception (which is at the stunning Millennium Hotel) and the guests arriving during cocktail hour. I am beyond thrilled for this wonderful opportunity.

Then, tomorrow evening I am doing a photo shoot with a family of four. Hopefully the weather cooperates....we'll be bringing lots of balloons to the park.....

Third, yesterday I made the investment into a new lens - a 50mm 1.8, which I will hopefully have within a week or so. I've heard many great things about this lens, especially for taking portraits.

And lastly, for now, here's a sneak peek at the more artistic side of photography that I've just started working on. This is a project in its very beginning stages, but I'm so excited that I just have to share a tiny bit with you. Notice the moon in each of these.....

{something beautiful}

The other day I discussed the fashion shoot I was heading out to do at the Walker Art Center, and I promised to return with something beautiful. I was not able to keep my promise, because the model bailed on me. No phone call, nothing. Just a total stand up. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, and upset, being that I'd driven almost an hour just to get to the Walker, and had been conceptualizing this photo shoot for weeks. But mostly, I was sad. We could have created some beautiful photographs, I just know it.

But I've moved on. There's much more beauty in the world to share (see below). I've read some terrible rumors about her (people are so mean). I think she's beautiful. Kate Moss:

I wrote about her earlier today, too.  I'm a little obsessed.

{fashion}

In a little over an hour I'll be heading to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis to do a photo shoot for a model's fall/winter portfolio (no, we will NOT be using the cherry and the spoon in any of the photos, haha). I am beyond excited about this. As much as I love quoting Fight Club ("you are not your f***ing khakis!"), I also love  fashion because it's yet another form of creative expression, another form of art. And fashion/model photography can go in so many different ways - creative liberties abound!

Because I use all natural lighting and work almost exclusively outdoors, my session today will be nothing like the one in the video below, but I still wanted to share it because I think it's cool. I especially love the black and whites of the model in the baggy jeans and heels.

{august}

 august. his laughter is the honey in your tea, the clink of ice in your whiskey, the freedom that children hold, like night holds moon, the way the late afternoon sun puts halos on us all.
