{something beautiful}

The other day I discussed the fashion shoot I was heading out to do at the Walker Art Center, and I promised to return with something beautiful. I was not able to keep my promise, because the model bailed on me. No phone call, nothing. Just a total stand up. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, and upset, being that I'd driven almost an hour just to get to the Walker, and had been conceptualizing this photo shoot for weeks. But mostly, I was sad. We could have created some beautiful photographs, I just know it.

But I've moved on. There's much more beauty in the world to share (see below). I've read some terrible rumors about her (people are so mean). I think she's beautiful. Kate Moss:

I wrote about her earlier today, too.  I'm a little obsessed.

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge - White

This week's photo challenge over at I Heart Faces is White - white has to be a big component of the picture, and it has to be a color photo - no black and white (that would be too easy). I had several from this same photo shoot that I could have used but I finally decided on this one because I love the movement in it - I love how her hand seems to be swooping that green sun spot and how you're viewing the moment right before they're about to turn back towards the camera - a moment of anticipation....

{fashion}

In a little over an hour I'll be heading to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis to do a photo shoot for a model's fall/winter portfolio (no, we will NOT be using the cherry and the spoon in any of the photos, haha). I am beyond excited about this. As much as I love quoting Fight Club ("you are not your f***ing khakis!"), I also love  fashion because it's yet another form of creative expression, another form of art. And fashion/model photography can go in so many different ways - creative liberties abound!

Because I use all natural lighting and work almost exclusively outdoors, my session today will be nothing like the one in the video below, but I still wanted to share it because I think it's cool. I especially love the black and whites of the model in the baggy jeans and heels.

{august}

 august. his laughter is the honey in your tea, the clink of ice in your whiskey, the freedom that children hold, like night holds moon, the way the late afternoon sun puts halos on us all.

inspiration: it's all in the details

I am constantly inspired by the little details - the colors and contours of the coffee mug my mom brought me from Germany, the way the wind and the sun make the shadows of the trees dance on my bedroom wall in the afternoon, and today, it's this can of soda. I can't get it out of my head. I love the colors, the elaborate font, the gold top. Everything about this can makes me want to drink what's inside of it, and I want to create an entire photo shoot around it - can't you just see it - long hair blowing in the hot, hot wind, a hot blue sky, hot white sand, strappy gold sandals...

my first wedding {the preparation}

Yes, today I am photographing my first wedding [insert anxious/nervous/excited bubbly shriek here]. Never was I expecting to do a wedding this soon -But, a cousin of my boyfriend's sister-in law (I know that sounds complicated. It's not), saw some engagement-style photos I did of said sister-in-law and her husband, and she really liked them and was wondering if I would photograph her wedding just two weeks away. Of course I would!

I'll be leaving the house in two hours and so far the weather is working wonderfully for this intimate outdoor event - 75 and mostly sunny. The wedding is at the couple's home, so I'm anxious to see the location, see where the light is coming from, the best locations to shoot.....usually I know the location where I'm going to shoot, so this is a day of newness in many ways, and I could be freaking out for a multitude of reasons, but I'm not. I just have to know that I need the following:

1. Coffee. Lot's of it (I need this all the time, actually).
2. Charged battery
3. Clear memory cards (I have 24 available GB, think that's enough? ha)
4. Creative Instinct (I have this. I need to trust it)
5. Confidence - Although I'm a total amateur when it comes to photographing weddings, and I could have severe anxiety about this, I'm not a total amateur with photography (I wouldn't call myself a top professional but I know how to make a good picture, and I teach myself more and more everyday); I'm not a total amateur when it comes to finding beautiful moments, beautiful light, and beautiful angles. And this is what I have to remember.

flower girls

Last night I did a shoot with Evelyn's cousins (and their mom&dad). Before everyone was ready I sneaked a few shots of Evelyn (on the right) and her cousin Ella. They're almost exactly a year apart, and so sweet (most of the time, ha).

my first senior photo shoot

Nicole is going to be a high school senior this fall, and she asked me to do her senior photos - of course I was thrilled! One of my dearest friends offered up her farm to use as our location, and I'm so happy with the results. Some of my favs from the shoot:
